Shawn Allen Denney

Shawn Denney Congressional Candidate Indiana District 5

Biography of Shawn Denney from Denney for Congress

As a longtime resident and native of Indiana, Shawn Denney has carried with him Hoosier values wherever he has traveled. Shawn graduated from Chrysler High School in New Castle in 1991. After taking a year off to work and save money for college, Shawn attended the University of Indianapolis where he completed a B.A. in Political Science in 1996. His college experiences allowed him to study abroad in China, Ireland, and Bulgaria.

Shawn’s professional background began in municipal government where he interned for the town of Middletown, also in Henry County. Shawn received the “Innovation in Local Government Award” from the Southern Indiana Rural Development Council in 1998. The award was presented by Congressman Lee Hamilton. Shawn went on to work in retail, insurance, and wealth management before the economic downturn of 2008 directed him toward education. “Influencing the lives of children was something I did on a more one-on-one mentoring level until I began substitute teaching,” says Shawn. “That experience made me aware of the greater needs in public education.” The experience led Shawn to obtain his Master of Arts in Teaching from his undergraduate alma mater.

Shawn explains that his father and his children are big motivators for seeking public office. “My dad worked for Chrysler in New Castle for 32 years,” says Shawn. “Although dad was able to retire from Chrysler and go into business for himself before the automaker pulled out of the community, others weren’t so lucky.” Shawn’s father continues to operate a successful small business in his hometown. “I’m worried the opportunities which were available for my father to provide for his family may not be there for my children when they start their families.” says Shawn.

Shawn believes strongly in service to community, having served on various charitable boards including the East Side Soup Kitchen, Child and Family Services, and the Finance Committee for the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan. He is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and an active participant of North United Methodist Church, both in Indianapolis.

Shawn seeks to be an advocate for opportunity in the 5th District by promoting manufacturing, job growth, and greater educational opportunities for all Hoosier children.
