Biography of Dan Morrison from Dan Morrison For Congress
Dan has lived in Elkhart, Indiana for over twenty-five years. He was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois – home of A.E. Staley Manufacturing and George Halas’ original Staley (Chicago) Bears as well as ADM, Caterpillar, Firestone and Mueller’s and numerous other quality American manufacturing companies.
Dan’s father was a train engineer for the Wabash Railroad prior to working in the AFL-CIO at Staley’s before a promotion to Building Foreman in charge of the Boiler Room for this plant of 1,500-2,000 employees.
Dan worked his way through college at Staley Manufacturing (loading hundred-pound bags of corn starch & dextrose) and Norfolk & Western Railroad (on a section gang laying ties & track).
Dan graduated from Millikin University with a B.A. in Political Science. However his passion for politics and the Democratic Party started long before his completion of college. John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King & Bobby Kennedy were trying to help the less fortunate while Dan was in grade school & high school. The devastating effects of their deaths were profoundly felt in Decatur as well as the nation. Dan preferred remembering the Presidential election night of JFK when he was allowed to stay up way into the early hours of the following morning waiting in anticipation for the final results. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream Speech on the Washington Mall at the Lincoln Monument was exciting even on the Black & White TV screen. And of course Abraham Lincoln’s first home in Illinois after he moved from Indiana was just outside Decatur. Dan has made the trip to visit New Salem & Springfield at least 20 times over the years. To walk in Lincoln’s footsteps, visit the only house he ever owned, his law office and his final resting place with the famous quote: “Now he belongs to the ages.”
Dan and his wife Nancy belong to St.Thomas Church where Nancy has taught and continues to be a Eucharistic Minister. Their children Doug, Jennifer, Lee & Blake all graduated from Marian H.S., all attended Holy Cross, before heading off to I.U., Loyola & Notre Dame.
Dan’s industrial experiences, having worked for Fortune 500 Companies, the local RV Industry and owning his own business throughout much of the last decade have all prepared him quite well to serve people in all walks of life.
“I’ve lived right here in Indiana throughout the entire recession as Hoosiers lost their jobs, savings and homes. Elkhart County lead the nation in unemployment for months, you just had to be here in order to feel the pain!”
